ICE Panels vs Stick Frame: Energy Efficiency
ICE Panels consist of a solid, thermally broken EPS core and a steel frame assembly. Due to the thermal break, ICE Panels provide R-values as high as R55, significantly lowering your heating and cooling bills each month. With traditional stick frame construction, your walls will not be thermally broken. Each stud will penetrate through the wall, allowing for the transfer of hot or cold thermal energy. An ICE Panel home’s energy modelling results typically expect energy costs to be approximately 45% less than if that home had of been built with traditional materials.
ICE Panels vs Stick Frame: Speed Of Construction
ICE Panel combines the insulation, framing, and vapour barrier steps into one streamlined process, whereas with stick frame, you’re only completing the framing step. So while it may seem like ICE Panels take longer, it really doesn’t, because your efficiently completing 3 steps in one. ICE Panels are lightweight and easy to maneuver around the jobsite. Typically a team of 2 crew members can fully erect an ICE Panel assembly in a matter of days, without burnout.
ICE Panels vs Stick Frame: Cost of Construction
When pricing out the cost to build an ICE Panel Home Package, The Concord to be specific, and achieve the same R-value with stick frame, the cost difference between stick frame and ICE Panels is approximately 40 cents more per sqft for ICE Panels. However, there is more to consider than just the square foot price. Stick frame construction is a multi-step assembly, whereas the ICE Panel assembly is a single-step assembly.
To achieve R36 with stick frame construction, the following components would be required, resulting in a 10.5″ thick wall:
- Double 2″ x 4″ walls with a 3.5″ gap
- 2 layers of R22 fiberglass insulation
- 1/2″ exterior sheeting
- 6 mil poly on interior
To achieve R36 with ICE Panel construction, all you would need to complete the wall assembly is the 7.5″ ICE Panel, and that’s it.
