What Is Graphite and Why Should It Be In Your Walls?

July 17, 2023

We’ve recently launched a premium option for the ICE Panel core — Graphite Polystyrene, also known as GPS. With this option, the core of the ICE Panel is infused with graphite. Let’s dive into why incorporating graphite into your building envelope is a direct path toward achieving peak energy efficiency.

When added to ICE Panels, graphite boosts thermal insulation capabilities. With an ICE Panel made with graphite, thermal radiation is drastically slowed down when traveling through the wall. Below is a visual representation comparing how thermal energy travels through EPS versus how it travels through GPS.

EPS vs GPS Thermal Energy Comparison

The addition of graphite significantly enhances the thermal insulation properties of ICE Panels, leading to better energy efficiency and lower costs for heating and cooling.

Due to the heightened R-values, graphite enhanced ICE Panels can be produced thinner, while still resulting in strong thermal performance. This creates more square footage in a highly energy efficient building. They are also more moisture-resistant than traditional materials, reducing the risk of mold and mildew growth. In short, using graphite in insulation materials can significantly improve their thermal insulation properties, leading to better energy efficiency, cost savings, and increased indoor comfort.

The main difference between graphite polystyrene and expanded polystyrene are the higher R-values offered by the GPS option. This means that graphite polystyrene provides better insulation performance than traditional EPS insulation. Build it smarter by building with graphite infused ICE Panels.
