New Home Program by FortisBC Makes Building with ICE Panels Smart Move

November 30, 2020

With new building standards being adopted and the demand for higher energy efficiency ever present, builders and homeowners alike are finding it hard to adapt. The COVID-19 pandemic is an additional strain, affecting business and personal financial situations. Both builders and homeowners are concerned with the rising construction costs, and are worried about how they will afford to meet the new construction standards.

“Build a home more energy efficient than the minimum BC Building Code requirements and you can qualify for a home performance rebate ranging from $3,000 to $10,000.”

Contrary to popular opinion, constructing a Net Zero building that also achieves Step 5 of the BC Energy Step Code can cost less than building a traditional code-minimum home in British Columbia, Canada. By building with Greenstone ICE Panels, you can own a new home that uses up to 70% less energy than a traditionally built home. With the added bonus of energy consumption rebates, it’s more affordable than ever.

FortisBC, an electricity and natural gas distribution company in British Columbia recently updated their rebate program to include the New Home Program. Their goal is to allow builders and homeowners to continue construction with energy efficiency as a top priority, and to “ensure that homes can continue to be built with resiliency from day one” (fortisbc.com).

FortisBC has adopted the BC Energy Step Code as the energy performance standard for their New Home Program. “Build a home more energy efficient than the minimum BC Building Code requirements and you can qualify for a home performance rebate ranging from $3,000 to $10,000.”

Thanks to current ICE Panel technology, Greenstone builders and homeowners in B.C. have already been building to Step 5 standards. The cost to do so is comparable when compared to the added materials and labour needed to achieve Step 5 with traditional wood-framed construction. The end result is a more comfortable home, healthier air quality, and a much lower monthly cost of living. Plus — it makes reaching Step 5 of the Code, and therefore qualifying for the FortisBC rebates, that much easier.

Currently, these incentives have an expiration date. The New Home Program rebates are being offered until December 31, 2022. So the time to build, is now. For more information on the rebate program, click here.
